Importance of Writing Title Tag in SEO

SEO has three most important factors nowadays which are page contents, the links and third one is page title or title tag. Page title or title tag is very useful and must be comprehensive as it is the brief description of what your site is all about. If the description is good enough then the page will be approached by both search engine and the end user.

Definition of Title Tag:

A title tag is the page title or description of a web page; you can say a summarized definition about page contents. This is the part of the web site contents that appear bold on search engine result page and is the first overview of your web site.

Page title is important for both the search engine and the site visitor. For search engine, the crawler will read the title tag and get the idea about page contents and then go to the page contents. If title tag is written and used carefully, higher search engine ranking can be achieved easily.

From user point of view, when a user searches for something in a search engine and a result page is displayed, what thing triggers the reader to click and come to your site instead of so many others? Obliviously this is your page title or title tag; it is like the “first impression” of your web site to the reader that should be great.

Title tag occurrences:

The Title tag or page title appears on three important places on the net and all these places are for the users or visitors so if title is used carefully, it can cause good traffic to the site. These places are:

  • Web browsers:

When a page is displayed in a web browser, the page title appears on the top bar as well as the part of the URL of the page. This portion gives valuable information to the end user about the page contents and you can create a good impression on user and the user will revisit you if he finds your page easily understandable.

  • Search Engine Result Page:

The first impression about your site is its page title that appears in the form of bold text in search engine result page. Visitor normally reads the bold part or page title on result page and compares it with what he is looking for. If the displayed page title is relevant to its query then he will open that site. So the page title must be written in comprehensive and “problem solving” way.

  • Other web sites and social media sites:

When you share your links on social media web site (like LinkedIn, Face Book or Google+) it’s the title tag that appears there and causes users to understand what the page is all about. So again it has importance in terms of the web page reputation, introduction and impression.

I will describe some important factors that should be kept in mind while writing title tag or page title:

  • Relevant page title tag:

If the search engine finds that the title tag is relevant to the contents of the page, it will rank the site higher but if it finds it irrelevant the crawler will drop the web page. I recommend you to first write the page contents and decide the title tag after concentrating the contents. Keep in mind: page title or title tag is a key to your site success and a door to enter into the site.

  • Interactive and attracting title tag:

The title tag should be so much attractive that it must trigger the reader to click it and visit the site. Writing a good title tag is the first step to bring visitor to the site and the second step is good and relevant (to page title) page contents.

  • Keywords in title tag:

The best use of keywords is to place them at the beginning of title tag text. The primary keyword should come first followed by secondary keywords. It is a good SEO technique from search engine point of view as keywords in title tag are checked by crawlers and are ranking increases. But one thing should be kept in minds that don’t be greedy at this point and don’t spam the page title tag with keywords. Be more specific and relevant as smart search engine crawler will drop you if it finds any effort or sign of spamming.

  • Keywords separation:

You should separate the keywords in page title tag with pipes (|) or hyphens (-) instead of underlines or commas. The advantage of using pipes and hyphens is that they are easy to read out by visitors and good from SEO point of view. If your keyword is “it-job” and user query string in “it job” or “itjob”, your keyword will be treated same as the search engine ignores pipes and hyphens and search engine crawler will consider the keywords written this way more than any other way.

  • Length of page title tag:

The maximum characters of page title tag that are displayed on search engine result page are 70. The others are not shown but with dots (………). Keep the length of title tag text to 70 characters otherwise some text will be missing and causes confusion for the reader. In order to make your title tag “clear” and all “understood” by the reader, keep its length of 70 characters.

  • Use of numbers in title tag:

Use of quantity or numbers in title tag writing is another good attractive technique for attracting visitors. If one title is “How to use face polisher” and the other is “10 ways of using face polisher”, then the more attractive title tag for users will be the second one.

  • Company or brand name

Also include the name of the company or brand in the title tag text. Good position for the company name is to place it after primary and secondary keywords or at the end of page title tag. The company or brand name will help you from search engine point of view as well as the user.

  • Use of Acronyms (Abbreviations)

As per good technique, the acronyms should be avoided if they are not most commonly used by the public. But in some cases they should be used in page title as they are the part of user search string. For example in case of any query having “search engine optimization” word, people normally type “SEO” or “seo” in the search string. So for most commonly used acronyms, you can use them in page title to attain search engine attention and traffic but avoid those which are not used commonly.

  • Use of modifiers in title tag:

Use of modifiers to increase importance of title tag or page title is also common. Modifiers are words that add more value and attraction to any title like “very”, “most”, “cheap”, “best” etc. When modifiers are added with the title tag they generate more enthusiasm and attraction for the reader.

  • Each page title tag must be unique:

A web site has number of pages and each page title must be unique hence every title tag must be written uniquely. This works in two ways; one it describes contents of every page separately, second it prevents search engine processing confusion about every page. If all pages have separate title tag, search engine can better understand the nature of every page but if title tag for all pages is same, it will be confused as which page has what purpose and will most likely drop such site.

As per all above factors, title tag is one of the three most important SEO techniques so must be given importance and time. Certain title tag writing softwares are also available in market in which you feed the page contents and they decide page title for you but still you can’t rely on some system for doing such an important and sensitive task.
